Born in Cheltenham in 1951, my lifelong interest in railways is apparently the result of being wheeled down to Lansdown station in a pushchair to watch trains on the Birmingham-Bristol main line.

From early days with clockwork Hornby O gauge tinplate, railway modelling progressed through Hornby-Dublo three-rail, and an awe struck encounter with George Illiffe-Stokes model of Cheltenham St James, resulted in the 4mm modern 'image layout' Hayley Mills in the 1980s.

This led to writing articles in the model press, and producing the regular LINESIDE LOOK illustrated column in Model Rail, and ultimately to a 17 year association with British Railway Modelling magazine.

In between enough time was found to build a large O gauge exhibition layout - Gifford Street - which remained on the show circuit for several years, until being retired and replaced by a new layout project based on Brimscombe in the Stroud valley.
